If you have poked around my website, you probably noticed my love of dogs. I realize that can be annoying for cat-lovers. Yet, if we dwell on our love and respect for ‘all creatures great and small’, it is evident (to me) that they are living, breathing beings who enter our minds and hearts and homes when we invite them. Rather than viewing animals through an anthropomorphic lens – it’s all about humans and animals are less than – consider the creation of animals from a few perspectives.
Religious Spiritual Perspective
Many traditions have their own explanations for the creation of animals. In Hinduism, animals are considered sacred and often associated with various deities. Buddhism teaches that animals are seen as sentient beings that deserve compassion and respect. In Christianity animals are often seen as part of the balance and beauty of creation, each serving a purpose in God’s plan.
Elephants are a sacred symbol in Hindu and Buddhist religions, representing loyalty, power, wisdom, and fertility.
Scientific Perspective
From a scientific standpoint, animals evolved over millions of years through the process of natural selection. They exist because they have adapted to survive in their respective environments. Each species plays a role in the ecosystem, contributing to the balance and functioning of the natural world.
Philosophical Perspective
Philosophically, the question of why animals exist can delve into the meaning and purpose of life itself. Some may argue that animals exist to contribute to the diversity and richness of life on Earth, to maintain ecological balance, or to fulfill specific roles within ecosystems.

Symbolism and Utility
In many cultures, animals hold symbolic meanings and are integral to mythology, art, and literature. They also provide food, clothing, labor, and companionship to humans, enriching human life in various ways. So, in honor of our animal friends, I offer this reflection from Meister Eckhart (14th Century theologian, philosopher and mystic):
“Apprehend God in all things,
For God is in all things.
Every single creature is full of God
and is a book about God.
Every creature is a word of God.
If I spent enough time with the tiniest creature –
Even a caterpillar –
I would never have to prepare a sermon.
So full of God
is every creature.”
